Our Cause, our blues and our responsibilities

By Munir Haidar

24/4/2008

There is no cause that is so clear, so simple, so fair, so just, so solid, so righteous, so needed, so vital and so important than the Syrian Cause. Yet, there is no cause that is more exposed and subjected to all kinds of ambiguities, ignorance, confusions, complexities, adversities, opposing forces, aggressions and injustices than this very same cause.

The Syrian Cause is about life, freedom, unity, sovereignty, prosperity, dignity and secured future for our people.   It is about the national identity, our people social cohesion and its unity.  It is about convincing all parts of our people that their true salvation and their very existence are wholly and utterly founded on their national unity and their social cohesion.  It is about making all parts of our people realise that they are not Assyrians, they are not Sumerians, they are not Chaldeans, they are not Akkadians, they are not Phoenicians, they are not Kurds, they are not Arabs, nor are they Muslims, Christians, Druze, Sunnis, Shiites, etc., but they all are Syrians moulded by the unique Syrian Civilisation and integrated into its very basic elements.  It’s about leading our people to work hand-in-hand, provoked by their love for life, persuaded by their strong and free will, armed with creative minds and motivated by their harmonious and unified souls.

This is on one hand.  On the other hand, the Syrian Cause is about defending the very existence of our people, their interests and their rights, against myriad of foreign and external forces that hold a real and genuine threat to this very existence and threaten its natural interests and its intrinsic rights.  Our people have never experienced, at any stage of their long and exciting history, a threat similar to the ferocious threat imposed on them at the present some sadistic and satanic forces.  They have never encountered any thing similar to such forces which despicable intention to uproot them from their land, the land which has embraced their fathers and ancestors for thousands of years, only to be replaced by rogues and ramblers from all over the world.

It’s of utmost importance to note that the term “Syrian Cause” refers to Natural or Geographic Syria which should not be confused with the present Syrian Republic State. Natural Syria includes all those political states which have been created by the imperialistic nations that were victorious in WWI. (Click here to read more on this issue)

It is an unchallenged fact that Sykes-Picot agreement forms the imperialistic landmark which records the fragmentation of Great or Natural Syria into many states proportionally controlled by Britain and France.  As a result, Britain had taken control over Iraq, Jordan and Palestine, while France had the control over Lebanon and present day “Syria”.

While the blues of our people are marked way before WWI, the Sykes-Picot agreement and the consequent events which took place during WWI and afterwards, have increased and deepened those blues and accelerated their extremely adverse effects on our people’s life and their natural and strategic interests.

There is no slightest doubt in our minds that the main factor which contributes most to our people’s blues is the state of ignorance that is being experiencing by their majority.  This state of ignorance is the result of our loss of self-control and sovereignty and the foreign occupation of our land and the calculated and oppressive foreign control of our people’s life for many centuries.

As a matter of fact, the neo-imperialistic forces, which are targeting and threatening the very existence of our people at the present, would not have been able to hurt them that much if it was not for this very same state of ignorance that plagues the majority of our people. These sadistic and malicious neo-imperialistic forces have exploited this state of ignorance and have built and dwelled on it and they still are.

This is why our people have lost Palestine to the Zionists and this is why some maniac was able to manipulate the entire international community to support him in destroying Iraq.

There is no doubt that the partnership between Zionism and neo-imperialism forms a combination of an evil and destructive threat to our people’s life, but nevertheless, their ignorance remain the key element to the final say and final result or their struggle against this threat.

This brings us to our responsibilities, the responsibilities of those of us who had driven out of our homeland for one reason or another.  It is not only impossible for us to ignore what is happening to our people in our homeland, but it would be very shameful and very despicable for us to do so.

It is a well known fact that most of us have adapted to the different environments that we are enjoying now.  It is also true that most of us have integrated their lives with the mainstream lives of those environments.  This is in accordance with our nature and character, the very intrinsic nature and character that we have inherited from our culture and our civilisation.  We have no complexes, no obsessions and no fears. We have confidence in ourselves and we are open to others with no hidden feelings or intentions which contradict what we say or what we do.

Nevertheless, we cannot and we should not ignore our roots or ignore the fate and well being of our people in our homeland.  We should always try to find ways to help them and defend them.  We should always try to find the ways by which we can do that without jeopardising our loyalties to our chosen homelands.  This is a job that every one of us needs to do.  It is our great responsibility, but questions remain: can we live up to it?  Time will tell.
